During the internship at iZone Driver Performance, I have engaged in a range of activities within a professional motorsport simulation and driver development environment. Key responsibilities included shadowing experienced driver coaches, running qualifying and race drills on multiple simulators, and supporting both in-person and virtual driver development sessions. I have observed and facilitated structured drills such as outlaps, push laps, and consistency exercises, independently led coaching sessions, and assisted with Esports simulator maintenance. Additionally, analysing telemetry and video data to assess and improve driver performance, providing a comprehensive introduction to the technical and interpersonal demands of motorsport driver development.
Throughout the placement, i have gained a variety of technical and professional skills, including:
Simulator Operation: Proficient in configuring and running advanced racing simulators for different car types and racing scenarios.
Coaching Techniques: Supported and independently delivered driver coaching, including setting drills, providing feedback, and employing tools such as laser pointers for vision training.
Data & Video Analysis: Reviewed telemetry and onboard footage to identify areas for driver improvement and communicated findings effectively.
Technical Maintenance: Assisted with troubleshooting and maintaining Esports simulation equipment.
Communication & Teamwork: Collaborated with coaches and drivers, adapting communication styles to suit different learning needs.
Problem-Solving: Addressed performance issues in both drivers and equipment, making real-time adjustments during sessions.
Time Management & Organisation: Managed multiple tasks across simulator days and documented progress through detailed log
During the Clio Cup at Silverstone, I supported the team as a race mechanic, focusing on key tasks such as changing wheels, ensuring the car was track-ready, and maintaining its cleanliness between sessions. I also assisted the driver with pre-race preparations to ensure they were comfortable and ready to perform. This event introduced me to the fast-paced demands of motorsport, where every second mattered, and teamwork was essential for success.
At the Fiesta Cup events held at Silverstone, Croft, and Donington, I expanded my responsibilities by working across multiple tracks with different setups and conditions. I played a crucial role in preparing and maintaining the vehicles, adapting to challenges such as tight schedules and varying track demands. This experience further developed my problem-solving skills and enhanced my ability to stay focused and efficient under pressure while working collaboratively with a larger team.
For the Race for Remembrance, I was responsible for running two Honda Civics in a grueling 12-hour endurance race. This required meticulous preparation and ongoing maintenance throughout the event to ensure reliability and performance. I managed tasks such as rapid tire changes, mid-race repairs, and coordinating with the team to address any issues promptly. This event was a true test of endurance, teamwork, and attention to detail, reinforcing my ability to perform effectively in high-stakes, long-duration events.
